About the role
The Graduate Student Library Assistant supports the Digital Production Lab by digitizing a wide range of library materials and ensuring high‑quality output. Working closely with the Digital Collections Administrator, the assistant also trains fellow student assistants and maintains documentation for scanning equipment.
Key responsibilities
- Digitize text publications, photographs, slides, sheet music, theses, drawings, and fragile primary sources using Fujifilm, Phase One, and Fujitsu ADF scanners.
- Perform image editing, basic metadata creation, and transcription of scanned texts.
- Provide training and troubleshooting for scanning systems to other student library assistants.
- Conduct quality‑control checks on scanned files and oversee advanced file conversion using command‑line tools.
- Organize and migrate digital files, ensuring proper naming conventions and storage.
Required profile
- Detail‑oriented with strong computer literacy.
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively.
- Available to cover shifts between 8:00 am and 5:30 pm, Monday‑Friday.
- Enrolled in graduate courses for the summer or fall semester.
Required skills
- Experience with macOS, Windows, or Linux operating systems.
- Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and CaptureOne for image editing.
- Familiarity with DSLR, mirrorless, or medium‑format cameras (Fujifilm, Phase One).
- Use of Fujitsu ADF scanners and related scanning accessories.
- Command‑line tools for file conversion and migration.
- Basic scripting knowledge (Python or batch scripts).
- Microsoft Office and Google Drive for data entry and documentation.
